Repent-Isighfar-Astaghfirullah-Repentance
Repent is – to turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one’s life.
Seek repentance from Allaah all the time; even if you believe you have not committed any sin; the sins you are not aware of are more serious.
Istighfar (Arabic: ٱسْتِغْفَار ʾistiġfār), is the act of seeking forgiveness from Allaah, usually by saying ʾastaġfiru llāhi (Arabic: أَسْتَغْفِرُ ٱللّٰهِ). It is considered one of the essential parts of worship in Islam.
“Istighfar” means to pray to Allaah that He may protect the supplicant from the evil consequences and poisonous influences of their transgressions and misdeeds, both in this world and the hereafter.
“Astaghfirullah” literally translates to “I seek forgiveness in Allaah“. In a religious way, people can recite it during meditation or say it to others to show humility. That is to say that Allaah is the greater or that goodness comes from Allaah. In popular culture, people can say this if they see something wrong or shameful.
Repent: A man once came to al-Hasan al-Basri and complained to him:
“The sky does not shower us with rain.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness (i.e. say أستغفر ألله) Istighfar (repent).”
Then another person came to him and said, “I complain of poverty.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness (i.e. say أستغفر ألله) Istighfar (repent).”
Then another person came to him and complained, “My wife is barren; she cannot bear children.” He replied: “Seek Allaah’s forgiveness – (i.e. say أستغفر ألله) Istighfar (repent)”.
The people who were present, said to al-Hasan al-Basri :
“Everytime a person came to you complaining, you instructed them to seek Allah’s forgiveness – Istighfar – Repent?”
Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “Have you not read the statement of Allah? ‘I said
“Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance; increase you in wealth and children; grant you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”‘” [Al-Quran Nuh (71):10-12]
There are two things in the earth that give a person safety and security from the punishment of Allah.
The first has been removed, whilst the second still remains. As for the first, it was the Messenger of Allaah (صلي ألله عليه و سلم).
“Allaah would not punish them while you were among them.”
[Al-Quran al-Anfal (8):33]
As for the second, it is istighfar. “Allaah would not punish them as long as they sought forgiveness.”
[Al-Quran al-Anfal (8):33]
أستغفر ألله… أستغفر ألله… أستغفر ألله…

Don’t leave Istighfar – Repent
Astaghfirullaaha wa ‘atoobu ‘ilayhi.
Meaning :- I seek the forgiveness of Allaah and repent to Him.
(Recite one hundred times in Arabic during the day)
It is reported in Saheeh Muslim that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I seek forgiveness one hundred times in a day.” [Muslim]
ASK ALLAH TO “FORGIVE” MORE THAN YOU ASK HIM TO “GIVE”.
Repent often & ask for forgiveness even when you think you’ve done no wrong. This was how the PROPHET MUHAMMAD (peace be upon him) lived; what more us, who sin daily.
Islam posits that human beings were created by Allah, with the ability to choose their own actions; either to do good deeds and obey Allah or choose to do evil deeds and disobey (Him).
However, Allah in His immense mercy and wisdom, knowing the fact that human beings were prone to slips, and in order to prevent man from carrying the burden of his sin(s) forever, opened the door of seeking Istighfar (forgiveness) for His servants who might have (mistakenly) committed sin or submitted to his desires and ignored the dictates of his conscience. Thus, Istighfar is the weapon of believers against shaytan who tries to lead them into hell by inviting them to sin.
Dua for seeking Forgiveness – Repent:
- Dua of Prophet Adam (Peace be upon him)
Rabbana thalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfirlana watar hamna lana koonanna minal khasireen
[Al-Quran 7:23]
Meaning :- ”Our Lord ! we have sinned against ourselves and unless You grant us forgiveness and bestow Your mercy upon us, we shall most certainly be lost”
رَبَّنا ظَلَمنا أَنفُسَنا وَإِن لَم تَغفِر لَنا وَتَرحَمنا لَنَكونَنَّ مِنَ الخٰسِرينَ
[SURAH AL-A`RAF, VERSE 23]
Dua of Yunus (A.S) repenting to Allah in the belly of the whale:
“LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANTA SUBHAANAKA INNY KUNTU MINATHAULIMEEN”
[Al-Quran – Al-‘Anbya’ : 87]
Meaning :- “There is none worthy of worship except You. You are pure. Verily I am amongst the oppressors.” [21:87]
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said about the Invocation of Yunus “None who is experiencing difficulty employs it except that Allah would relieve him of his difficulty.” [At-Tirmidhi]
Nooh (A.S) asked for the forgiveness of Allaah The Almighty, repenting:
Rabbi Inneee A-o’od’u Bika An As-alaka Maa Laysa Lee Bihee I’lm Wa Illaa Taghfirlee Wa Tarh’amneee Akum Minal Khaasireen
[Al-Quran 11:47]
Meaning :- “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers.”
(Al-Quran, Surat Hūd, 11: 47)
We must recite this dua’a to have full faith in the wisdom of Allah.
Under all good and bad circumstances because Allaah is all-knowing; and humbly seek His help to keep ourselves on the right path.
Say: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni
Meaning :- O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me.
Say: Astaghfirullah al-ladhi la ilaha illa huwal hayyul qayyum wa atubu ilayhi
It says in hadith, whoever says it seven times his sins will be forgiven even if he should have run away from the battlefield.
Say: Subhan Allah wa bhihamdihi
Whoever says it hundred times, his sins will be forgiven though they may be as much as the foam of the sea.
Say: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah lahul mulku wa lahaul hamdu wa huwa ala kuli shay’in qadeer.
And say the many other forms of repentance that are prescribed by Allah.
“Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran wa la ya’ghfirudh dhunuuba illa anta fa’ghfir li ma’ghfiratan min ‘indika warhamni innaka antal ‘ghafurur rahim.”
Meaning : “O Allah, I have greatly wronged myself and You alone can forgive sins, so grant me forgiveness from you and have mercy on me. You are the forgiving and Merciful One.
Allahumm-aghfir li, warhamni, wa-hdini, wa ‘afini, warzuqni”
Meaning :- O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, guard me against harm and provide me with sustenance and salvation.” [Muslim]
ALLAH HAS FULL ABILITY TO GIVE YOU ANYTHING YOU WANT! AND ONLY HE (SWT) HAS THAT ABILITY.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Verily your Lord is Generous and Shy. If His servant raises his hands to Him (in supplication) He becomes shy to return them empty.” [Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]
The door of salvation through repentance is wide open for all who truly seek to enter. – Dr. Bilal Philips
“You are the servant, He is the Master.
Prayers come from you, answers come from Him.
Abstinence comes from you, protection comes from Him.
Repentance comes from you, acceptance comes from Him.
Go towards Him walking, He will come to you running.”
Allah forgives even the worst of sinners. Don’t let Shaytaan prevent you from repenting to the Most Merciful.
Please Share and remember that you will receive the reward for all those who make Istighfar, due to your reminder.
